Study Presented at 44th Annual Meeting of Society of Toxicology -
UC-II(TM), InterHealth
Nutraceuticals' undenatured type II collagen, significantly reduced both pain
and lameness associated with arthritis in a four month study conducted on dogs
at Murray State University Veterinary College, Hopkinsville, KY. The study
also showed that a combination of UC-II and glucosamine plus chondroitin
sulfate provided significantly better results than glucosamine plus
chondroitin sulfate alone, suggesting that a formulation of these ingredients
could provide enhanced benefits to joint health sufferers.
UC-II is a patented nutritional ingredient manufactured by InterHealth
Nutraceuticals of Benicia, California. It is the only source of undenatured
type II collagen available as a dietary supplement. UC-II differs from
denatured or hydrolyzed type II collagen in that protein structure of the
collagen is not broken down, which is key to its effectiveness.
Results of the study were presented at the 44th annual meeting of the
Society of Toxicology in New Orleans, March 6-10. The study, entitled
"Efficacy and Safety of Glycosylated Undenatured Type II Collagen (UC-II) in
Therapy of Arthritic Dogs," has also been accepted for publication in the
Journal of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics.
"This study provides strong evidence that UC-II can provide significant
help for those suffering from joint health problems," stated Dr. Ramesh Gupta,
professor and head of toxicology and veterinary medicine who led the research
team. "It also shows that UC-II can significantly enhance the effects of
glucosamine plus chondroitin sulfate in arthritis sufferers."
Large breed dogs, which commonly experience arthritis due to obesity,
injury, age and immune disorders, were divided into three groups. The control
group received no supplementation, while Group 1 received one milligram of
UC-II per day and Group 2 received 10 milligrams per day (the recommended
human dosage). Those that received UC-II showed a marked decline in pain and
lameness after physical exertion, with the 10 milligram dose being the most
effective. Neither dose produced any side effects or changes in serum
chemistry, and was well-tolerated.
"This research provides further evidence that UC-II can provide
significant relief for the 43 million Americans who suffer from joint health
problems," stated William "Skip" Seroy, president of InterHealth
Nutraceuticals. "We are especially gratified by the research showing that
UC-II can compliment and enhance the benefits derived from the widely used
chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine."
UC-II, made by InterHealth Nutraceuticals, is the only source of
undenatured type II collagen available in the marketplace. It is protected by
U.S. Patents 5,645,851, 5,637,321, 5,529,786, and 5,750,144; worldwide patents
are pending. UC-II is available in products sold in natural health stores and
on the Internet. Consumers can identify these products by looking for the
UC-II logo on the label.
